Silken Windhounds were developed in the 1980's by Francie Stull in Austin, Texas. She wished to add a second breed to her kennel after Borzoi. After researching many other breeds, she came to the conclusion that what she really wanted was a smaller Borzoi. She quickly discovered that there was no existing coated sighthound breed of a medium size. The program began with long-haired Whippet-based lurchers, now known as Windsprites, with the addition of Borzoi and Whippets. The result of this project is a medium sized dog with a beautiful medium coat and a delightful temperament.
